During this week, we returned to school and uploaded all the footage we filmed during the holidays. The footage we shot came out very clear and my partner and I are very pleased with the outcome. We have edited the footage we have gathered so far, and it looks exactly how we visualised it to be. However, there are parts where we need to use cuts and close ups to hide the continuity errors that we have made. The continuity will also be a problem throughout the music video as the weather and the lighting outside is changing as it is getting darker quicker therefore we have less time to record in the daytime which means it will naturally look darker when we are recording. Another problem that we have when recording is the timing as our actors cannot film at certain times therefore our filming schedule doesn't work at this time.
Also, during our free time my partner and I learnt how to use the green screen, whilst we don't have much to be doing at this point in the project. We will possibly use the green screen for our photoshoot of the Artist for the Magazine Advert.

Shooting Script
This is the shooting script we have written up for our music video. We have colour coded the all the shots within the same locations so it is easier for us to identify all the shots that need to go together and filmed within the same day to avoid breaking the continuity.

Blog Reflection 8
During this Half Term week, my partner and I met up and added more detail to the script and made changes to the final treatment based on the changes we made to our idea.
Also, during the week, we got in contact with our actors and shot some footage.
We filmed the first 10 shots of the script in the bedroom and outside on the street. We also took a little extra footage in case the shots don't look as accurate once its been uploaded to the Mac.The only problem with filming during the holiday was the actors weren't available at the same time so, finding a balance and the right day to film was difficult. I also used these holidays to finish adding the text on the flat plan for the Magazine Advert and DigiPak, after my partner completed the images on these. Next week, we will film more footage once back at school and start editing the footage we have shot during the holidays.

Blog Reflection 7
During this week, as it is deadline week, my partner and I began to create the production schedule and shooting script for our music video. I focused on creating the production schedule particularly, whilst my partner did the call sheets. We left the shooting script till last as we wanted to do this together. We found this fairly difficult because it was hard to plan out every little detail down to 3 second shots which we were not completely sure about. We will try our best to stick as closely to this shooting script as possible and in the event of a shortage of shots, we will film more than we need. This will be beneficial for us if we need to replace some. I also completed the DigiPak flat plan whilst my partner worked on completing the Magazine Advert flat plan. Next week, we shall begin filming during the half term holiday in which my partner and I plan to film a majority of our music video, however we still need to find a girl to play the love interest in the music video, which we must do by the end of the week as it will hold us back from filming in the holidays.
Recci Images
This image which has been taken in my bathroom, is one of our locations for our music video. In the opening of the song, when the instrumental is playing (15 secs) we want to have the artist shown getting ready but we don't want to show his face to the audience in the intro. The intro is 15 secs long in which we will have short shots showing the artist gradually getting ready. In this shot in particular, we want to show him in the mirror doing his hair, getting ready to go out. The show we want to do, will be from behind him, in the reflection of the mirror, but his face will not be visible. This will add suspense to the video and the audience will be anticipating his appearance.

London is one of the main locations in which we wish to film our music video. In order to make our video appeal to our target audience, we must ensure to use locations which are easily identifiable, as well as relevant to the theme. As the song is about a relationship, we want to show the couple being romantic and spending time together. Showing a long shot of them walking along the embankment is quite romantic and is something couples would be seen to do. We also wish to film in other places in London which are much busier, such as Trafalgar Square/ Oxford Street. This would create more of an atmosphere in the video and would make the main actors stand out more amongst a crowd.

Blog Reflection 6
During this week, we have been working towards our deadline and completing all our pre production work. In 2 weeks, we will be starting the production part of the project, so I spent a lot of time perfecting all my blog posts to get better marks. We also recorded a focus group after conducting a survey for our target audience and to find out what they typically expect from a Hip-Hop/ Soul video. This week, all the work was completed, which enabled my partner and I to start drawing up the flat plan. Next week, we will be completing our shooting scripts, production schedules and call sheets, so there will be a lot of pressure, but as we have been doing all along, the work shall be split evenly between me and my partner and proof read by one another.

Survey Analysis
Analysing our survey results, I can say that the most
important character trait people expect to see in the artist is confidence. I
will ensure to choose an actor who is willing to lip sync and feels comfortable
acting in front of my partner and I, as well as in public amongst other extras
and people that may be involved in creating this music video. The respondents
also stated that the artist would have to be in touch with his fashion and be a
real charmer, appealing to the female target audience, which is mainly the
target audience for this music video. The artist’s image is very important to
the music video as it defines the video, as a whole, so, we will ensure to
create an image that the audience expect to see. By looking at the responses we have collected, we will have our artist wear fitted jeans, fresh white trainers, and a white t-shirt. This is smart, casual and classy all in one and may also get him to wear a hat, as it is typical of boys this age, and is highly in fashion currently. The most popular artists that
the audience think our artist relates to are Jason Derulo and Mario, which is what we were hoping for. This will help us establish our artist properly, and we will use these artists as role models for our own artist. The brand
and artist image that these both have, are exactly how we expected our artist
to be so we will plan the image of our artist thoroughly. Respondents also
expect to see a narrative theme in the video and the development of their
relationship which is beneficial for us because it shows us that the audience
has the same vision of the video as us, and understand exactly where we are
coming from with our opinions.

Focus Group on Final Idea
1:01- Katherine's physical description of the artist matches the image that the partner and I have of the artist. As this is the first time she is listening to the song, her opinion is essential to us because she had no background knowledge of the artist at all, which tells us that the image we expect the artist to have, and what the audience expect them to have, matches well, thus showing us as meeting our target audience well.
5:56- Aleemos took initiative and gave us further feedback, elaborating on the question I asked them, and going into more detail about his point which we loved about him. As well as understanding our views, he also gave examples of how we could make our music video. Chris Brown- Forever and Excuse Me Miss which follow the same structure we wish to create.
Overall, this focus group was very useful for us as we got to talk about our ideas in the open, in full detail as well as keep our options open to the ideas everyone had given us in addition. The main thing which I liked about this focus group is initially, everyone had a similar vision in reaction to hearing the song the first time, which means, as an audience, they have a clear idea of their expectations.
Audience Research Survey
After merging our ideas, my partner and I had to conduct a survey to try and find out what types of videos our target audience would expect for the song we have chosen and how they think the artist would be. My survey can be found on the link below:

Blog Reflection 5
This week, I had to merge my ideas with another member in the class, to produce an overall idea of music video. We decided as a pair to choose his artist 'Jackie Boyz' because the video can be made to match the lyrics better and the song would appeal more to the target audience. However, we decided to stick with the theme of narrative/ interpretive and live performance which I had chosen when pitching my music video. Also, we contacted the music artist and he gave us permission so we were both happier to use him. This week was very productive for us as we got permission, and allocated tasks to each other.

Permission and Final Song
After our individual pitches, we had to merge with someone in the class and chose a final song. We chose to use my partner's song because the lyrics were broader and will therefore allow us to be more flexible and creative with the music video. Whilst choosing his song, we agreed on incorporating the visual ideas and video types I had explained in my pitch as these can also relate to this song. After deciding on the song, we had to find other means of contacting his artist because he had still not gotten a response via email. I found him through social networking sites and alternatively asked his permission on twitter, where I have attached the permission beneath, and a link to the song and lyrics which is called 'Callin' Me' by Jackie Boyz.

Blog Reflection 4
In this week, I had to find a music artist from unsigned website, that would give permission to us to use their song for no commercial use. I struggled a fair bit to do so, and when I found the artist, he didn't reply to me so it was hard to get hold of him, especially because he couldn't be found on twitter and Facebook were I could contact him directly. I also had to analyse the lyrics of his song and prepare a pitch of my music Artist to the rest of the class. In this, I discussed who the target audience would be, the artists brand/image, lyrics, and potential themes/ideas for my music video. Following this, I conducted a focus group with the members I presented the PowerPoint to, and was pleased with the overall feedback and constructive criticism I received. I will ensure to take all these comments on board when I actually go to create my music video.

Pitch Evaluation
Overall, I received positive feedback. Everyone seemed to
like the song I had chosen. They particularly liked the lyrics of the song and
thought they would be good to base a music video on. I explained how I wanted
the style to be narrative, telling a story of the lyrics and showing the
development of the relationship between the characters in the video, which they
also agreed with. From this pitch and focus group, I can definitely state that
my music video will be in a narrative form as everyone thinks this is
appropriate for the song. However, they also said I could consider including
live performance showing the artist lip syncing, looking directly at the camera
as these two styles would complement each other well and break up the
narrative, making it more entertaining for the audience, as opposed to just a
boring story showing a relationship between a boy and a girl.
Also, they liked the idea of the locations I have chosen.
They agree with London being a romantic, and identifiable location, allowing
the audience to relate to the video, however, they do think that using London
as a location will be risky. They brought to my awareness that it’s highly
likely that the actors I choose will not be willing to travel that far out to film
and in the worst case scenario if the footage hasn’t come out as well as my
partner and I have expected, it will be extremely difficult to re film these
scenes. I couldn’t agree more with this opinion, and so will try to create a
video using public locations and places that are easily accessible for the
characters and us so we can get the most out of our filming time.

Lyrics/ Analysis of Fortune- Go on Girl
[V1:]
I can't get it back, but
I don't want it back, I
Realized that,
She don't know how to act
Never been a dumb dude
No I'm not dense
I Just had a slight lack
Of common sense
I was the good guy
She was the bad girl
I'm thinking one girl
She thinking me, earl James and jimmy
Yep she had plenty
But love for me, she didn't have any
I was inviting, her into my heart
But she was out riding in some other man's car
She was my night time, thought I was her star
Guess I was wrong, but see I'm strong
Wont take long for me to move on
[Hook:]
Please don't worry bout me I'm fine
(Please don't worry bout me I'm fine)
Only gonna play the fool one time
(Only gonna play the fool one time)
Trust me when I say
That I'll be ok
I can't get it back, but
I don't want it back, I
Realized that,
She don't know how to act

[V2:]
I can't get it back, but
I don't want it back, I
Realized that,
She don't know how to act
Tried to settle down and look what I get
Thought it was my time, but I guess not yet
She at the bar getting drinks from many men
I'm in the house, thinking she’s with her girlfriends
Just not knowing, truly not knowing
I look back now like, man, I was open
I was inviting, her into my heart
But she was out riding in some other man's car
She was my night time, thought I was her star
Guess I was wrong, but see I'm strong
Wont take long for me to move on
[Hook]
[Bridge]
The mistake I made is clear
(we never should've been together)
That’s the reason you're not here
(I know that I can do much better)
Not a single salty tear
Not a feeling in my chest
Baby I'm feeling no stress
I'm too fly to be depressed
Go on Girl
Go on Girl
Go on Girl
Go on Girl

Analysing the Lyrics: Fortune- Go on Girl
Section 1- Target Audience
Age: 15-25 year olds
Gender: Mostly Females ( A Minority) Males
Interests: Hip Hop/ Rap Music, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Socialising, Media Studies, Makeup, Sports...
Location: London
Ethnicity: British, Mixed Race.
Section 2- Analysing the Lyrics
As you can see, this song is about a guy who seems to be writing about a relationship that ends up falling apart due to her cheating on him with another guy. This is obvious when he states "I was inviting, her into my heart, But she was out riding in some other mans car". He has written the lyrics in first person, almost as if he is writing this from his own personal experiences.
Section 3- Analysing the Music
The instruments used in the song seem to be a guitar, a piano and a soft drum beat. The sound within the song is very gentle and relaxing and the combination of these instruments make the song sound soothing to the ears. Between the Bridge and Chorus there is a break in the music where all you can hear is the instrumental which breaks up the lyrics.
Section 4- Analysing the Tempo
The tempo of the song shifts from slow to moderate. This is very important to the song as it helps tell the story of the song as well as present the emotion that's within the song. If the song was to have a faster tempo it would ruin the lyrics of the song as it would not be synchronous and disturb the image and audio with the lyrics.
Section 5- How I would use this song in my music video
I chose the song/lyrics based on the idea of music video I had in my head. Ideally, a popular Hip-Hop theme is relationships so seeing as I wanted to do this genre, I had to choose a song with lyrics that typically fit the conventions of this genre. After being inspired by the Rihanna- Unfaithful and Beyoncé- Broken Hearted Girl video, I have decided I would like to have the artist standing in front of a green screen doing a live performance/ lip syncing to the song as I will have the artist in the video as the guy in the relationship. I would like to do this because I can place him in any background I wish, preferably a white background as white symbolises cleanliness and purity, also can symbolise innocence and vulnerability which is just one of the ways he many be feeling at this point as his heart has been broken. And I also want to include scenes of him and her together, in black and white because the song has a very gentle melody to it, I want the video to be fairly interpretive like its telling the story of their relationship. I would like to have a pretty dull colour scheme, colours like black, white, greys would be ideal as they can help set the emotional mood and match the lyrics. I would like to shoot the couple together in London as it is a romantic place for couples to hang out, the camera can be following them spending time together for example walking along the embankment, walking past the London Eye and Big Ben as these are the Landmarks within London and anyone watching this can see why this location has been deliberately chosen.
Finding an Artist/ Permission Letter
The artist I have chosen to use is 'Fortune' who I found from the website Unsigned.com and the song I chose is 'Go on Girl'. Here is a link to his page on which you can find his details and information.
Here is the email I sent to the artist asking for permission to use his song, and his reply is still pending. Hopefully within the next few days he will be able to return my email.Sunday, 22 September 2013
Blog Reflection 3
During this week, the key concepts we analysed, were representation and genre. We looked at the different theories in relation to these concepts and learnt about how music videos generate certain messages and exactly what the denotations represent to the audience. Some of the theories include 'The Male Gaze', which I have shown an example of in the image above, 'Repetition and Difference' Theory, 'Bordwall's Theory'. Of all of these theories the ones I will use in particular would be the Male Gaze as the artist of my song is male and so the woman in the video will be there to make the singer look good almost as a show piece trophy girlfriend, also engaging both men and women equally, as women are often made to see other women through the male perspective as stated in the theory. Bordwall's Theory will be very relevant to my final idea, as having any theme in any genre video can help me create a unique video, without having copied any existing video styles of music videos. I can also adapt my idea, simplifying the video, by using these themes as a guideline rather than sticking to a specific theme throughout my music video.
This week, I also had to analyse music videos and state why they appeal to me. As I am in the early days of research, I chose to analyse individual videos to each other to keep my options open and show that I have quite a broad imagination when creating my music video.
Beachcombing
Kanye West- Good Life
This has to be one of my most favourite videos ever because the way it has been edited. The animated theme for this Hip/Hop/ Rap is very unique. I have never seen a video made like this, considering animation has become a lot more popular now. The costumes have been kept true to the genre of music for example the big flashy watches and big leathery jackets. Also, there are parts where they are looking directly at the camera, towards the audience, as is done in these kind of music videos. There are a good range of camera shots within the video, the long shots are very effective as they show different animated backgrounds forming behind him and the close ups show his facial expressions in a very detailed way when he is singing to the audience. I find the animation in this music video very effective and eye catching to watch. The bold colours make the images and animations stand out on the screen against him dressed in all black. I will try and incorporate this in my music video in some form or another as I find this video very inspiring.
Justin Bieber- Beauty and a Beat
This is a perfect example of a house party style fun video, which I have always thought would be fun to shoot. In this video, I particularly like the use of camera movement and shot types as it shows Justin holding the camera and films him, filming himself. The frame within a frame is a very effective technique as it makes the image look different and more interesting. The background dancers in the music video make it more entertaining for the audience and yet again are mainly female, making Justin Bieber look good and seem to be desired.
N Dubz- Ouch
The reason I chose this video is because it matches the narrative of the song and fits the interpretation theme where the video acts like an image of the words, almost telling a story. The short shots edited together add mystery to the music video as the audience do not know what they will be seeing but the lyrics give them an idea. N Dubz are a band who have been born and raised in Camden Town in North London estate flats and are seen as the "hoodrat" type.Their career in music has only just started to take off and this is well shown through their costumes as they haven't yet transformed their image and the costumes have been kept true to their image. For example in the video, the girl is shown wearing a tracksuit and these are identified as "chavy" clothes which is what the girl in the video is wearing. Also, there seems to be violence in the video which again makes it realistic in terms of matching the lyrics of the song as well as their image. Seeing as the song I have picked is about descending relationships, unfaithfulness and cheating, I thought it was a good song to relate my thoughts to and I would like to keep the idea of a story within the song an option for my own music video.

Blog Genre Theory
Neale's Theory of Genre shows a system of orientations, expectations and conventions which circulate between industry, text and subject. In relation to this, we watched Biggie Smalls video 'Sky's the Limit'. This is a perfect example of a text that meets the audience's expectation of the Genre. The Genre of this song is Rap/Hip Ho which is typically represented in the music video through the mise-en-scene and other typical conventions such as the big expensive mansion they have filmed majority of the video in and the flashy cars. Also the use of a panning camera movement and establishing shots of the location emphasise these features. Showing off wealth is a main convention of a Hip-Hop song as it makes them look like powerful dominant figures, like role models to those who wish to be like them. In this video, just like every other music video, there is a live performance by the singers where they are looking and singing directly at the camera engaging the audience.
The Blink 182's 'All the Small Things' music video is a good example of a rock genre video where the 'Repetition and Difference' applies. The typical conventions in this video would be the live performance by the band with the guitars on stage, performing to an audience. However, the comical parody makes this subvert the typical video, thus making it both entertaining for the audience and different. In addition to this, the exaggerated and dramatic use of mise-en-scene makes the ridiculous costumes and the beach/sunset locations humorous and original, because rock bands would not be seen to perform or present themselves in this way.
Bordwall's Theory of 'Any Genre can appear in any music video' will be beneficial towards me when making my own music video, because I will not have access to millions of pounds to be investing in this music video, unlike professional Hip-Hop/ RnB videos. I will not be able to have a typical fancy house, cars and big performing artists. Being able to mix up the music videos and Genre will also enable creativity, so I can make the video however I wish, without my work being copied from any other video.

Blog Reflection 2

This week we have returned to the A2 year where we have seen the result of the Thriftshop video remake we had completed. By watching this remake, I have learnt in more detail of all the different themes and styles as well as what they mean and how they can be portrayed. For example, I knew what the theme parody was about but didn't know how this could have been portrayed in the song we were given.
The mash up video is a good example for me to evaluate each of the styles. The theme I was allocated was animation and I really struggled with this because to produce a good animation, as you can see in the image I created above, it is very time consuming, and I didn't have very much time. It taught me exactly how successful and unsuccessful certain styles are and the likelihood of us being able to create the effects we want with the themes.
Digital Technology Progression
Last year during the BSR opening sequence project, I demonstrated my creativity through Digital Technology that I used. Hardware used in this project included HD camera and flip camera. These cameras were used to film the relevant scenes. When we went out to shoot at our locations, we used the HD camera because the clarity of the image and quality of the picture/ sound was better. The flip camera was used in the preliminary task as were just beginning to become familiar with the technology and flip camera is quicker and easier to use when doing small tasks. The Software we used included iMovie, Fireworks and Final Cut. This software was used to edit our opening sequence and piece it together. By using this software, I learnt how to use the new iMovie and used Final Cut for the first time. This is beneficial for me as I will need to be able to use these programmes in upcoming projects and will already be familiar with them. Websites we had to use include Youtube, Blogger and Issuu. Youtube was used to upload our final edited work videos from which we could watch ourselves, and Issuu was used to upload our Powerpoint tasks. But most importantly, I learnt how to use Blogger and this was the most challenging for me as I had never used it before and struggled for quite a while to figure out how it is used. We carried out research by watching many BSR films to gain the knowledge on the topic itself and used these films as an inspiration for our own. As well as this, we created recci videos to experiment and carry out investigations of different locations.
When editing the work, Images and Graphics were created in Fireworks and Livetype. This was slightly difficult as Livetype is a complicated programme to use and a lot to learn in a short space of time. The music in the opening sequence was produced by a friend Faiz Pokun and was created in Logic. We chose to have music made for us rather than making it ourselves because it would be less time consuming and better to have it produced by a skilled professional. Most importantly, we included the typical conventions of BSR films, but at the same time, made it look original. For example, we kept to the theme of cultural clashes and racism which is a main theme outlined in BSR films but made it a love story between a white british male and an indian girl.

Blog Reflection 1
The project this year we am going to be completing is making a music video. This week, we have been introduced to the project and learnt the different themes and types of music videos, as well as the conventions of them.
I would like to work with Gurtej because he is a very committed person, and priorities his work well and is always working during his free time. This will benefit me as I also work during my free time so we can easily get all our work completed before the deadline, and allocate time to get feedback from teachers to perfect any work that can be improved, to ensure we both achieve the highest grade we possibly can.
I hope to achieve a solid grade for this project and hope to come up with an original, strong idea for the music video between me and my partner, which will represent the hard work and planning gone into it.
I fear that my practical video will let my grade down, as it did last year and held me back from achieving the higher grade. This emphasises the fact that all my written work must be of an excellent standard, so, if my music video was to let me down, then at least my coursework will help back up my grade.

Styles and Conventions of Music Videos
Performance- Beyoncé: End of Time
This video is an example of live performance within a video, as the official music video includes snippets of her concert whilst on tour, where she is shown singing and interacting with her audience. The institution may have chosen to use this method as it would encourage people to go see the artist live and become more in touch with their music. I will try and incorporate this theme in my music video as it breaks up the video and makes it entertaining for the audience.
Interpretive- Frank Ocean: Thinking Bout You
This is when the music video is ambiguous and allows the audience to find their own meaning within the video. The story line for this song isn't very clear and so allows the audience to make up a story line that suits them. The institution may choose to do this because the content of the song may be quite serious and heavy. So they may want the audience to give the video more thought and form their own opinion. This style doesn't appeal to me in particular as I don't imagine myself choosing a serious song.
Narrative- Taylor Swift: Love Story
This is an example of a narrative music video, in which the video tells a story of the song lyrics. This would benefit the institution as it would keep the audience engaged to the song by following the story exploring the lyrics. This theme is appealing to me, and I think my music video will be based on this style as it is easy to shoot, and would help express the lyrics to the audience in a clearer manner.
Impressionist-
This is when the mood of the music video sets the tone of the song. The pace of the editing within the video, matches the beat of the song. The slow cuts and fades emphasise the tone of the song. The institution would use this as its typical of this genre music. This appeals to me, as I want to choose a song which belongs to the Hip-Hop/ RnB genre.
Surrealism- Storm Queen: Look Right Through
This is an example of a surreal music video, in which there is a surprise, unusual juxtaposition. Institutions would be able to create word of mouth promotion through doing this, and expand their target audience by getting people talking about it very quickly. This would be a good way to shoot a music video, and if relevant to the song I chose, I will consider incorporating this in my final piece as it would make the video different, and conforms to any typical conventions of any particular music videos. Also it would be fun to shoot the video.
Animation- Kanye West: Heartless
This style of video, is when the whole music video has been done in animation. This differentiates the video from being just like all of the others. Also, it stands out to the audience from other existing videos. I wont particularly use this style for my music video as I don't feel it would match the type of song I am looking for as well as being extremely time consuming to create for a whole music video.
Pastiche/ Homage- One Direction: Best Song Ever
Pastiche/ Homage is the limitation of a text features by another text. it could be the same style of feature similar motifs or
even be a copy of the original. sometimes a pastiche copies the style from a period in time.
In this video, we see the band deciding on their image, which is significant to them as it shows them finding themselves
as artists. The images they try and pull off are images of existing artists and typical boybands. This is beneficial for the institution
as it makes them attract a wider audience, possibly fans which may belong to other existing boybands of a different era.
